Research studies have shown that meditation can significantly improve an individual’s physiological and psychological health. Meditation promotes the healing process because brainwave pattern are brought into an alpha phase or consciousness level in EEG. Meditation can bring a healthy phase of relaxation. Meditation causes a comprehensive decrease in various physiological and biological markers. for example it reduces respiration rate, heart rate, basal metabolic rate, reduces plasma cortisol etc. Fall in the metabolic rates and brain waves becomes more attentive during the meditation. These are the great researches about meditation. Decreased metabolic rates indicates that there is drop in the oxygen and nutrients utilization. It was observed that it decreased by 20% of the normal level. This level was even less than what is generally experienced during deep sleep. Even the heart rate of the meditator was less than the average. So one can withstand for long time in Meditation as in hibernation of frog.
During meditation it was observed that the blood pressure of the body was maintained at a lower level. The various activities of the nervous system were also reduced during meditation. All the above observed symptoms of meditation work in conjunction to relax and de-stress body.
